UHS CORE

"What is CORE?"

CORE stands for the Community of Racial Equity.
Although our name highlights racial equity, our efforts towards equity are for the benefit of all marginalized people.

"So...what do you guys even do?"

With our school administration's support, we've progressed in district-wide change. Some of the continuing developments we work towards are:✦ Equipping staff to combat discrimination.
Ex: We created a guide entitled "Preventing and Acting Against Prejudice" (PAAP) as a tool for teachers and staff.✦ Providing resources for students to seek help.
Ex: We've introduced a new reporting system for students to fill out a form making a report to the school's admin.✦ Creating school-wide diversity celebrations.
Ex: We're planning for spirit weeks, celebration & awareness months. Which will be recognized through events, posters, music, etc.CORE also engages with our community outside of school. Some of our previous work includes:
✦ Raising money to make a donation to the non-profit Equal Justice Initiative.
✦ Organizing a hygiene drive to support Des Moines Refugees.
✦ Participating in local volunteer opportunities.

"Why should I join CORE?"

We highly recommend CORE if you have an interest in the following:
✦ Advocating for others
✦ Engaging with your community
✦ Having input in school/district systems
✦ Being a part of a team/family
✦ Having support navigating school/society
✦ Receiving help in finding Silver Cord opportunities
✦ Developing skills in teamwork, communication, leadership, job skills, organizing events, and much more!CORE club is a fantastic way to break out of your shell. We would love for you to join the club. You're welcome to as many meetings as you are able to attend. (Fridays 3:30 in Ibrahim's room 112!) You will also be credited for any additional effort such as artistic work, bringing new ideas, or leadership in projects.

If you aren't a student at Urbandale you can always support us via social media and contact us at [email protected] if you would like to collaborate!We welcome ALL Urbandale High School students and staff to our meetings. All you have to do is show up on:
Fridays at 3:30 in Mrs.Ibrahim's room classroom
(Room 112, across from the Media Center.)We expect you to:

✦ Additional work helping out with the club projectsAt the end of each year, we select a student leadership team for the next year. If you're interested in taking a leadership role, take the extra mile in demonstrating leadership and dedication. Our current leadership team would happily support you in taking an initiative and executing your ideas.

"Who runs CORE?"

Urbandale's CORE is a student-led team.
